enemy (page 106)

Use this word.  During the existence of White Supremacy “Racism). use the word “enemy” and / or the term “the enemy” to mean those White persons who have chosen not to do all that they can to replace White Supremacy (Racism) with Justice (balance between people).  When others use the word “enemy” and / or the term “the enemy” ask for a detailed explanation that you can easily understand.  When White person use the word “enemy” and / or the term “the enemy” ask if they mean “the enemy” of justice “balance between people).

During the existence of White Supremacy (Racism), use the term “the enemy” to apply only those White persons who practice White Supremacy (Racism), and / or who refuse to oppose White Supremacy (Racism).  During the existence of White Supremacy (Racism) do no use the word “enemy” and / or the term “the enemy” to apply to any person who is not a White Supremacist (Racist).  If a person who is to do harm to you, do not say that the person is an “enemy” and / or is “the enemy.”  Say that he or she is an “opponent.”

Notes:  According to Compensatory Counter-Racist Logic and during the existence of White Supremacy (Racism), it is correct to blame the White Supremacists (Racists) for any and all harm that comes to those who are subject to the White Supremacists (Racists).  During the existence of White Supremacy (Racism) all of the Non-White people of the known universe are directly or indirectly subject to the White Supremacists (Racists).

Passionate Living Coach Abiola Abrams gives love, dating and self-esteem advice on the CW‘s Bill Cunningham Show and all over the web through her hit web seriesAbiolaTV. Now she wants to help you keep things spicy and fresh between the sheets. Are you in need of an intimacy intervention? Just ask Abiola!

Dear Abiola,

My man keeps calling me a “nigger bitch” during sex and I hate it.

I have been married for a year and I am at my wit’s end. My investment banker husband is from a White old money family. I am a first generation Black-American woman whose family is from the island of Jamaica. We met at a reunion for the ivy league school we both attended, and he proposed in six months.

We have the picture perfect fantasy life. He wines and dines me and we travel and shop the globe. Unlike all of the Black men I dated in the past, my husband is generous, loyal, committed and considerate. He courted me and I never have to pay for anything. He said I could quit my job and I did. He makes me feel like a woman.

I am a little embarrassed to share our problem. The first time he let the n-word drop was during sex on our honeymoon. When I reacted negatively, he explained that a Black woman he dated in the past enjoyed being called racial slurs. Another time he joked that he had purchased my freedom. He also speculated about whether his family could have owned mine because I have “good hair.” Then he made jokes about my pubic hair. He called it my “negro bush” and referred to himself as a “nigger lover.” He says I am being overly sensitive because he loves me to death and should get a “Black pass” for marrying me.

images

I told him that I don’t appreciate these comments and he says that my friends and family probably use the n-word all the time. He also asked why Black people can use the word and he cannot. I don’t use the word or believe in the nigga/nigger differentiation. Neither does my family. I am too embarrassed to tell anyone about this because I know they might say: “That’s what she gets for marrying a White man.”

Every time we try having sex again, the slurs fly. Our sex life is pretty much over right now because I pretend to be asleep every time my sexy, handsome man wants to be with me. I feel completely turned off. I love my husband deeply so please don’t tell me to leave him because that’s not what I want to do.

My husband was my first interracial relationship. Please tell me racial slurs aren’t normal between interracial couples? I would like to figure this out before we have kids but I can’t afford to leave him and still maintain my lifestyle.

How can I regain my sexual attraction for my husband?

Signed,

Black and Proud

My Dearest B.A.P.,

There is nothing about this situation that is okay. Of course you’re turned off. The biggest sex organ for us as women is between our ears. Unlike men, if we’re turned off outside the bedroom we will usually be turned off in the boudoir as well.

So, you’re worried about maintaining your lifestyle?! Sis, let’s talk about maintaining your sense of self.

First of all, you are not being overly sensitive and it is condescending for your husband to say that while he’s calling you racist names. There is nothing normal about being called out of your name in any relationship.

Second of all, queen, your husband needs a history lesson and you need counseling. His comments are verbally abusive and emotionally harmful. I agree that this issue needs to be addressed before you bring children into the picture.

There are no “Black passes.” When our White friends ask why they can’t use the n-word, I always wonder why they would even want to. Even though your husband’s ”last Black girlfriend loved it,” he should respect your choices. Black people are not a monolith. In addition, no one should ever compare a partner to an ex.

This man is betraying you and you are not honoring yourself. This is not a judgment of his ex-girlfriend. Anything that two consenting adults agree to sexually is their business. Bold African-American sex educator Mollena Williams, who describes herself as “the perverted negress” and a “slave” on her Twitter page, is an expert on “race play.” She teaches that “for those who are drawn to explore deeper and deeper crevasses of our psyche, the desire to explore that taboo can be compelling.” However, this is not what you signed up for or something you sound even remotely interested in.

Your husband’s behavior and your acceptance of it have eroded the intimacy between you. The foundation of love is trust and a feeling of security. There is no way to feel safe while being reminded of the subjugation of your ancestors during vulnerable moments when you have clearly asked him to stop. The fact that you have expressed your dislike and that your husband persists is hateful and troubling.

Don’t let his hate speech drown out your inner wisdom. I understand that you feel ashamed but keeping this secret is only deepening your trauma. Confide in someone. Shine a healing light on this situation so that you are not isolated and feeling trapped and alone.

Reality check: I know that you don’t want to leave your husband. It’s a beautiful thing that you are taking your vows seriously. He, however, is not. He is not loving, honoring nor cherishing you. If traveling the globe playing “Real Housewife of the Big House” while he drops n-bombs is not your idea of fun then you need to ask yourself some serious questions.

Your sex life will not improve unless your man changes his behavior and you feel heard. So, can his behavior be changed? Write this down: The only man you can change is one wearing diapers. Abusers have to want to change themselves. Hubbie has to first realize the depths of what he is doing wrong. It doesn’t sound like he does.

In addition, you may want to examine your own racial attitudes. I am sorry that you had challenging experiences with your previous partners. However, when we lump all Black men together as cheap or disloyal we may as well be calling them the n-word ourselves.

If you stay with your man for money while he is speaking down to you, then I’m afraid you have personally sold yourself at an auction to the highest bidder. It’s time for a self-esteem check, doll face. You deserve better. Counseling will give you tools to determine your relationship’s future. For your friends and family, the problem is not that you are in an interracial relationship. The issue is that your husband is a cold and classless bigot, bully and boor. Jerks come in all colors.

Passionately yours,

Abiola

The White Gaze – Is it Fear or Racism?

racism

The White Gaze should be terrifying to anyone aware of its meaning.  Not only does it strike without warning; but in many cases, it takes, and destroys lives when it does. Is the White Gazefear or racism?

Though it’s not a physical ailment, the White Gaze is a debilitating sickness, caused by the horribly apathetic state of mind, called racism.  It can cause such mental devastation that even if you survive, the pain is indelibly etched on your brain with heart-wrenching torment.

George Yancy, Professor of Philosophy at Duquesne University stated in a recent article, that the White Gaze is the fear that white people have of blacks.  In short, it’s defined as looking at the world through the eyes of a white person who has undertones of, or is blatant in, their racism.

Simply put, the gaze means that you that you have no right to belong.  You have no right to belong in certain neighborhoods; you have no right to belong in certain schools. And if you’re black, you have no right to belong anywhere that those affected by the White Gaze feel that you shouldn’t be.

When those who are gazing see you as a threat, or someone to be feared, even if the feeling is contrived, murder often follows. Sadly, for many, being at the wrong place or in the wrong situation has proven fatal.

Many Michigan residents are outraged of the November 2nd murder of 19-year-old Renisha McBride. Even more are wondering if 54-year-old Theodore P. Wafer was afflicted by the White Gaze when he took the life of this innocent, unarmed, young black woman.

Wafer, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan shot McBride in the face with a shotgun when she knocked on his front door seeking help after being in a car accident.

Sources say that McBride, who had been drinking crashed her car sometime around 1:00 a.m.  A woman at the scene said that Miss McBride sustained minor injuries from the accident and was bleeding from the head. According to the unidentified woman, McBride kept saying “I want to go home.”

According to sources, McBride, who appeared shaky and disoriented left the scene and somehow wandered to Wafer’s front porch.

The distressed and dazed McBride knocked on Wafer’s door seeking help, but instead, she was met with a deadly shotgun blast which ended her young life.

The question again arises, was the White Gaze responsible for Police shooting and killing 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell?

Reports indicate that Ferrell, an unarmed black man, was shot and killed by police in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Ferrell, who was in a devastating car crash on Saturday, September 14, 2013, ran towards Police for help, but instead he was tased and shot to death.

The former Florida A&M University football star was seeking assistance after he was in a serious car wreck.  According to Police Chief Rodney Monroe, Ferrell more than likely climbed out of the back window of his badly damaged vehicle and ran to the closest house for help.

Upon answering the door, the homeowner inside thought it was her husband knocking at the door, but opened the door to find Ferrell.  Chief Monroe further stated that the woman closed the door, hit her panic alarm and called 911.  When Police arrived at the scene, a man matching the homeowner’s description of Ferrell ran towards them.

Upon seeing the young black man running in their direction, one officer fired his stun gun, but Ferrell still ran towards them for help. At that time Officer Randall Kerrick opened fire; shooting Ferrell multiple times, killing him at the scene.  No one gave Jonathan Ferrell the benefit-of-doubt because in their eyes, he didn’t belong.

Undoubtedly, the most publicized story of the White Gaze is that of George Zimmerman. For over a year, papers were satiated with news of the 28-year-old man who took the life of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012.

Zimmerman, who was a neighborhood watch patrolman in Sanford, Florida for a private community, stalked and fatally shot Martin, because in his eyes, Martin didn’t belong in the gated community which he was patrolling. After police arrived, Zimmerman, an armed White-Hispanic man was taken to the hospital for head injuries.  While Trayvon Martin, an unarmed young Black man, was taken to the morgue.

Though no one can say for sure that these murders were White Gaze related, we can undoubtedly say, that they were senseless.   When life is lost to violence, it doesn’t matter whether it’s because of  the White Gaze, fear, blinding racism or just plain-old-hatred, it doesn’t diminish the pain of those left behind.

Though we may never know the true motive for these senseless acts of violence, one certainty prevails, “No one knows what lurks in the hearts of men,” but men themselves.   And the White Gaze is proof-positive of that.

This is White History: medical racism

Day 19 of White History Month: Medical Racism

The United States (along with other countries in the Western world) has a history of medical racism. The general population is unaware of the history of medical racism, and white health professionals are as well. John M. Hoberman of UT-Austin says that medical schools do not teach students about the history of medical racism, nor do they give them proper diversity training. Many Americans of color have grown to distrust medical professionals, and many white Americans attribute this to paranoia rather than their knowledge of historical and contemporary medical mistreatment.

Medical racism has often benefitted white Americans disproportionately while simultaneously harming Americans of color, as well as people of color outside of the United States. White Americans benefit from medical advances, while individual people of color were harmed, and in some cases, large groups of people of color have been harmed. From trying to “better” the race, to making scientific advances, white people have used and disregarded the rights people of color for their own benefit. Medical racism shows the lack of value ascribed to the bodies and lives of people of color.

Eugenics

The eugenics movement in the United States became very popular and manifested itself in many different ways. Anti-miscegenation laws, birth control, sterilization, forced abortions, forced pregnancies (of white women), and the promotion of higher birth rates for neurotypical white women. Eugenics policies were first instituted in the United States. Laws that advocated the sterilization of those with mental illnesses were in effect in the early 1900s, and soon spread to other countries.

Eugenics movements advocated for the eradication of those with mental illness, those who were homosexual, “promiscuous”, and most of all, those who were outside of the “Nordic” or “Aryan” race. Eugenics was advocated for by many famous white Westerners, including world leaders such as Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, and Calvin Coolidge.

While eugenics was highly unpopular after the Holocaust, the eugenics tradition of the United States actually provided the background for Nazi Medicine. While most people are aware to some extent what the horrors of Nazi medicine entailed, few people are aware of the American eugenics tradition that inspired it. Eugenics societies promoted “fit families” and “better babies” through awards at contests, but they also promoted harmful legislation barring immigrants and sterilizing “undesirable” people.

Controlling Reproductive Rights of Women of Color

Black Women

Due to the eugenics movement, thousands of Black women were sterilized. In North Carolina, 7600 people were sterilized between 1929 and 1974, 85% of them women and girls, and a disproportionatenumber of them people of color (39% in the 1940s, 60% in the 1960s while making up only 25% of the population). The program that allowed for their sterilization was not eliminated fully until 2003. Black women were also sterilized without their consent in other states.

Puerto Rican Women

The United States has held Puerto Rico as a territory since 1898. As a solution to Puerto Rican economic problems, the US government felt that reducing the population of the Puerto Rican government would help. The US sterilized over one-third of Puerto Rican women, many uneducated and working class, between the 1930s and 1970s. Most of these women did not understand the procedure and did not know that it would render them sterile.

Additionally, the US used Puerto Rican women to test out birth control pills in the 1950s. These women were not informed that the pills were experimental – only that they would prevent pregnancy. They were not informed of the possible side effects ranging from nausea to possible death – three women died during the birth control pill trials. Women who reported side effects had their concerns dismissed by researchers.

Native American Women

Native American women who used the Indian Health Services were subject to numerous violations of their rights, particularly their reproductive rights. Some women who underwent procedures such as appendectomies would also have hysterectomies performed on them without their consent. At least 25 percent (and as high as 50 percent) of Native American women of reproductive age who used Indian Health Services were sterilized without their consent or after coercion. Largely white male doctors would use Native American women as “practice” for performing gynecological procedures on white women.

Tuskegee Experiment and Guatemala STD Experiment

In 1932, the Tuskegee Institute worked with the United States government to perform a study on a group of Black men with syphillis. The men were recruited to the study with promises of free meals, transportation to the clinic, medical exams and even treatment for minor medical concerns. The study lasted 40 years and involved the participation of over 600 Black men. This sounded like a good arrangement in theory, but researchers did not hold up their end of the bargain. By 1947, penicillin was widely used as treatment for syphillis. The researchers neglected to inform the men involved in the study in addition to refusing to treat the men.

As a result of the Tuskegee Experiment, nearly a hundred men died, and hundreds of partners and children were infected with the disease as well. Not only was this a breach of research ethics, as the participants did not give informed consent and were not treated for their ailment. The men and their families won a $9 million class action lawsuit in 1973, but this of course was not enough to make up for the damage that was done.

Similarly, the same researcher who uncovered the Tuskegee Syphillis experiment, Susan Reverby, discovered that a similar situation occured in Guatemala. The US Public Health Service and Pan American Sanitary Bureau worked with the Guatemalan government to do research on 1300 Guatemalans that involved intentionally exposing them to STDs.

The experiment involved many who are considered disposable in society – sex workers, mental patients, prisoners, and soldiers. Only 700 of these people were treated, and during the study 83 people died. Some of the most disturbing incidents during the study involved injecting epilepsy patients in the back of the head with syphillis, as well as the infection of a terminal illness patient with gonnorhea (she died six months later). The Guatemalans in the study also did not give informed consent.

Henrietta Lacks

Henrietta Lacks (1920 – 1951) was a Black woman who went to Johns Hopkins Hospital to be examined for serious medical concerns. After a biopsy was performed, she was diagnosed with and subsequently treated for cancer. While she was being treated, healthy and cancerous cells were removed from her cervix without her consent. She died in 1951, but the cells stolen from her body continued to be used. Though she died poor and was buried without a gravestone, her cells were used for many medical tests. From routine tests for human sensitivity to substances to the development of the Polio vaccine, her cells were used for medical advances. Her family only learned about the removal of her cells in the 1970s, and she is largely unknown despite the contributions to science she had made.

Current medical racism

Distrust of medical health professionals, along with racist attitudes probably contribute to medical health disparities. Racially linked anxiety disorders have been linked to racism at the hands of white people. A significant number of Black women report racism and sexism contributing to their stress and to stress-linked overeating.

Stressful life circumstances are reasons for hypertension and many mental health ailments. Working and middle class Black women who report multiple  forms of discrimination are more likely to have high blood pressure than those who report fewer incidents. Black Americans who are more confrontational about racism are less likely to have elevated blood pressure than those who stay silent, which can be attributed to the effects of suppressed hostility.

Today, doctors still exhibit subconscious racist attitudes. A study in the American Journal of Public Health (March 2012) showed that a full two-thirds of the doctors in the sample were racially biased. White and Asian health professionals showed anti-Black bias, but Black health professionals showed no bias.

Doctors are more likely to speak more slowly to Black patients, extend their visits, and to lecture and talk down to them. This shows that the doctors are paternalistic and don’t care about respecting their patients or asking for their input

Additionally, white doctors are prone to giving worse care to patients of color, regardless of their income. People of color are less likely to get the diagnoses and treatment that they need, for everything ranging from heart disease medication, HIV treatment, and dialysis. Black women are the least likely to receive the pain medication that they need. Mental health professionals are less likely to diagnose people of color with an appropriate diagnosis because of their race.

This is White History.
