white Wiccans: naked massages, ‘kissing and rubbing’ and exchanging locks of pubic hair: sex parties that forced Anusara yoga teachers to quit

Movement: Friend stepped down in February as the figurehead of Anusara yoga, which has 600,000 students worldwide, for an indefinite period of what he called ‘self-reflection, therapy and personal retreat’

It was the lurid scandal that rocked the world of yoga to its core.

But now new details have emerged of the Wiccan group sex parties hosted by John Friend, the founder of the popular Anusara yoga movement.

Friend is said to have founded a coven of women called Blazing Solar Flames who would give him naked massages to increase the amount of ‘energy’ between them.

According to The Daily Beast he called himself ‘Grand Magus’ and dubbed one of his women ‘High Priestess’ as they got down to the ‘mix of kissing and rubbing’.

He also told them to cut off locks of their pubic hair – and put them in an altar for another member of the coven.

Friend stepped down in February as the figurehead of Anusara yoga, which has 600,000 students worldwide, for an indefinite period of what he called ‘self-reflection, therapy and personal retreat’.

He admitted to having sex with students, married women and his employees, cheating on his girlfriend and smoking marijuana.

There were also allegations about financial mismanagement in relation to pension funds.

More than 100 Anusara yoga instructors have now quit in disgust and the future of the movement which was once championed by the likes of model Gisele Bundchen is unclear.

In an interview with the Daily Beast one of Friend’s closest former teachers has for the first time revealed more details about what exactly went on at his sex parties.

‘Melissa’, not her real name, said she first met Friend in 2002 when she became one of his Anusara students.

She became a teacher and grew close to him due to their shared interest in Wiccan philosophy, to the extent that he dubbed her his ‘High Priestess’.

Things became sexual when he suggested they oil up and give each other naked massages to mark the winter solstice, a Wicca holy day.

Melissa said: ‘John wanted us to do the ritual in sexy underwear and kiss each other on the mouth, tongue-y kissing.

‘It was certainly never the way that I had experienced Wicca’.

The first meeting of what could become an official Wiccan coven took place in the summer of 2009 in Montreal when Friend hosted a yoga workshop in Montreal.

On New Year’s Eve that year they met again at his home in Woodlands, Texas when he and three of his women got together.

The plan was that they would take turns to massage each other and raise their spiritual energy, making it a more intense experience.

Things culminated in Friend lying naked on his bearskin rug in front of a fire with one of the women massaging his head and upper torso, another doing his hands and a third women working his groin region.

All the girls were wearing just their underwear at the time.

Melissa said that to begin with she went along with it because she trusted Friend, but mid-massage she had second thoughts.

She said: ‘There was no digital penetration, but there was definitely this mix of kissing and rubbing.

‘Suddenly I started crying and I didn’t know why. I couldn’t tell if I was embarrassed, even though these were people I was supposed to trust’.

She added that she felt like she was doing ‘something out of Hustler or Penthouse, and I just thought, Wow, this guy is living the dream’.

Melissa added she was also deeply uneasy when Friend suggested they cut off some of their pubic hair, stash it in a jar and leave it in an altar set up by another member of the coven.

Among the other allegations against Friend which emerged in February was that he engaged in ‘sex therapy’ and swapped explicit pictures with some of his students.

Yoga teacher Betsey Downing told the Daily Beast that she was on a conference call with Friend and other instructors when he admitted to having helped a married woman heal from a sexual trauma earlier in life.

Friend never discussed the lewd photos on the conference calls, though members of the community saw them on the original website, jfexposed.com.

Whilst some Anusara teachers are standing by Friend, who is still the face of the brand, others have been withering in their judgement.

Livia Shapiro, a well known yoga instructor who has quit the movement, said those who still support him are victims of ‘spiritual incest’.

She said: ‘I think these people are still under the influence of the anesthesia of John’s power’.

Friend was not available for comment but has in the past denied being part of a sex coven.

His publicist Katy Yaeger denied that he had misappropriated pension funds.
